Intro

Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa.
Mihai: And I'm Mihai!
Maryssa: And welcome to Culture Class: Essential Romanian Vocabulary, Season 1, Lesson 3! In this lesson, you'll learn five essential words related to food and drink. These are the five most common beverages in Romania. Hand-picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at RomanianPod101.com.
BODY
Maryssa: Mihai, what's our first word?
Mihai: vin
Maryssa: "wine"
Mihai: [SLOW] vin [NORMAL] vin
Maryssa: Listeners, please repeat:
Mihai: vin
[pause - 5 sec.]
Maryssa: Romania is the sixth largest wine-producing region in Europe and has different grape varieties. Grapes are harvested during the fall and the wine is laid down by the end of October. In the middle of October there are different harvest festivals and one of the Romanian traditions is to drink freshly bottled wine alongside pastrami.
Maryssa: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Mihai: [NORMAL] Cel mai faimos vin românesc alb și dulce este cel din podgoriile Cotnari.
Maryssa: "The most famous Romanian sweet white wine comes from Cotnari vineyard."
Mihai: [SLOW] Cel mai faimos vin românesc alb și dulce este cel din podgoriile Cotnari.
Maryssa: Okay, what's the next word?
Mihai: țuică
Maryssa: "a spirit distilled from plums"
Mihai: [SLOW] țuică [NORMAL] țuică
Maryssa: Listeners, please repeat:
Mihai: țuică
[pause - 5 sec.]
Maryssa: This is a traditional Romanian alcoholic beverage, usually made from plums and the best one contains 40-55% alcohol. It is the country's national drink. There are three types of țuică: the most common one that can be found in every house or store has 28% alcohol, the "old" one (more than 3 years) that has 35-45% alcohol, and the special one called "extra" that has 50-55% alcohol. During the winter, Romanians will boil țuică with different spices, such as black pepper, clove, or cinnamon and will use this as a cold remedy.
Maryssa: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Mihai: [NORMAL] Pentru un litru de țuică de bună calitate sunt necesare mai mult de 15 kg de prune.
Maryssa: "For 1 liter of good quality țuică, more than 15 kilograms of plums are needed."
Mihai: [SLOW] Pentru un litru de țuică de bună calitate sunt necesare mai mult de 15 kg de prune.
Maryssa: Okay, what's the next word?
Mihai: socată
Maryssa: "elderberry soft drink"
Mihai: [SLOW] socată [NORMAL] socată
Maryssa: Listeners, please repeat:
Mihai: socată
[pause - 5 sec.]
Maryssa: One of the most appreciated Romanian traditional soft drinks. It is made out of elderberry flowers. During the communist period, this was one of the most appreciated soft drinks by the children, but after the international market was opened and big brands like Coca-Cola or Pepsi came to Romania, nobody was interested in this drink anymore. In the last decade, it's popularity grew again and it became appreciated for its therapeutic value.
Maryssa: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Mihai: [NORMAL] Socata este o băutură răcoritoare foarte bună pe care o poți face chiar tu.

Maryssa: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Mihai: [NORMAL] Siropul de vișinată dă un gust bun atunci cand îl pui pe înghețata de vanilie sau în spuma de ciocolată.

The process is very simple and after only two weeks, the delicious liquor can be served. Unofficially this drink is considered "the alcoholic drink of Bukovina" (a region in the northern part of Moldavia) because there, all the guests are welcomed at the entrance of the house with a small glass of afinată.
Maryssa: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Mihai: [NORMAL] Te poți pili destul de repede de la afinată.
