Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa.
Mihai: And I'm Mihai!
Maryssa: And welcome to Culture Class: Essential Romanian Vocabulary, Season 1, Lesson 6! In this lesson, you'll learn five essential words related to food and drink. These are the five most common fruits in Romania. Hand-picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at RomanianPod101.com.

Maryssa: The most popular fruit in Romania is an apple. They can be found in every house and in every season. Apples can be stored in dark, cold places for a long period, so many Romanians buy them during the winter. They store huge quantities of apples on their balconies, in garages, or in cellars.

Maryssa: Romania has a great climate for cultivating grapes: hot summers and long, gentle rain falls. There are numerous varieties of grapes in Romania grown for eating or for making juice or jams, but the main reason grapes are cultivated is for producing wine. In the last 10-15 years, Romanian wines have won many gold and silver medals at prestigious international contests.

Maryssa: A great souvenir that can be bought from Romania is a bottle of alcohol with a pear inside. The amazing thing about this is that the bottle was prepared weeks in advance and the pear was let to grow inside it.

Maryssa: Cherries are seasonal fruits in Romania. You can eat those delicious fruits only in May or June. The ones that are harvested in May are not very sweet and their color is yellowish-pink. There are many types of cherries in Romania such as bitter cherries, black cherries, and sour cherries.

Maryssa: Romania is among the top three plum producers in the world, and most of them are used to make țuica (a Romanian national drink). Another famous Romanian product made from plums is called magiun; it's a plum paste, very similar to jam, but with no preservatives or sweeteners.
