INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, and welcome back to RomanianPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 11 - A Romanian Job Interview. Dana Here.
Mihai: Bună. I'm Mihai.
Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn about expressing logical relations. The conversation takes place in an office meeting room.
Mihai: It's between Maria Mareș and Bogdan.
Dana: The speakers are an employer and employee; therefore, they will speak formal Romanian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Dana: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Bogdan: Doamna Mareș, din ce am înțeles, aveți o experiență foarte mare în vânzările auto, atât regional, cât și național. Așa este?
Bogdan: Mrs. Mares, from what I understand, you have extensive experience in car sales, both regional and national. Is that right?
Maria Mareș: Da, este corect. Am lucrat timp de 10 ani în această industrie, făcând vânzări corporative pentru patru dintre cele mai importante mărci de pe piața locală.
Maria Mareș: Yes, that is correct. I have worked for 10 years in this industry, providing corporate sales services for four of the most important brands in the local market.
Bogdan: Pentru noi este un lucru îmbucurător. Îmi puteți oferi, vă rog, mai multe detalii despre această experiență? Fie că este vorba de tipul de clienți, fie de strategiile folosite sau orice mai considerați relevant.
Bogdan: For us, it is a fortunate thing. Can you please give me more details about this experience? Whether it's the type of clients, or the strategies you use, or whatever you consider relevant.
Maria Mareș: Da, sigur. Am început la compania Motors &Co, în anul 1998. Pe atunci, exista un singur brand major în piața locală. În schimb, începeau să prindă avans și alte branduri mai puțin cunoscute pe piață. Eu am început ca reponsabil vânzări pentru unul dintre aceste branduri mai mici.
Maria Mareș: Yeah sure. I started at Motors &Co in 1998. Back then, there was only one major brand in the local market. Instead, other less well-known brands began to catch up. I then started as a sales representative for one of these smaller brands.
Bogdan: Vă ascult.
Bogdan: I am listening.
Maria Mareș: Da. Este vorba despre Cluza, un automobil foarte economic, care acum este foarte apreciat de clienții corporativi.
Maria Mareș: Yes. It was with Cluza, a very economical car that is now very much appreciated by corporate customers.
Bogdan: Bun. În afară de acest brand, ce altceva ați mai vândut de-a lungul carierei?
Bogdan: Good. Apart from this brand, what else have you sold throughout your career?
Maria Mareș: Păi, au mai fost Libra la Energo SRL, Directa și Ozon. Însă, indiferent de brand, strategia de vânzări nu a diferit substanțial.
Maria Mareș: Well, there were Libra at Energo SRL, Directa, and Ozon. But regardless of the brand, the sales strategy did not differ substantially.
Bogdan: Am înțeles. Puteți detalia puțin această strategie, vă rog?
Bogdan: I understand. Can you give us more details about this strategy, please?
Maria Mareș: Da, desigur. Întâi de toate, urmăream să văd ce istoric de cumpărare a avut clientul. Apoi, în funcție de produsul meu, încercam să construiesc cea mai bună abordare.
Maria Mareș: Yes of course. First of all, I wanted to see what the customer's purchasing history was. Then, depending on my product, I tried to build the best approach.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Dana: Mihai, how is the job market in Romania?
Mihai: There has been a noticeable growth in the Romanian job market.
Dana: Is it because of the increase of multinational companies?
Mihai: I believe so. But as you know, it has just happened recently. Before communism ended in 1989, Romania was an industrial country where the younger generation chose one job given to them by the government based on educational background.
Dana: So the government decided what you did.
Mihai: That’s right. But not anymore. Also, we can see some significantly different patterns between different generations when looking for a job. While older generations look for something stable, younger generations change jobs often, not just for a better salary, but for other benefits as well: schedule flexibility, working space, gym memberships, premium health insurance, holidays, and professional training programs.
Dana: I know it happens in many countries these days, but it seems it changed so quickly in Romania due to the social and business changes in the country. Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Dana: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is...
Mihai: pe atunci
Dana: meaning "back then"
Mihai: This is an adverbial phrase made of the preposition pe "at" and the adverb of time atunci "then."
Dena: It literally translates as "at then" and means "back then."
Mihai: For example, you can say... Pe atunci nu erau așa de multe benzinării în oraș.
Dana: ...meaning "Back then, there were not so many gas stations in the city."
Dana: Okay, what's the next phrase?
Mihai: a prinde avans
Dana: meaning "to catch up"
Mihai: This is an expression composed of the infinitive form of the verb a prinde "to catch" and the neuter singular noun avans "advance."
Dana: It literally means "to catch advance" and means "to catch up."
Mihai: For example, you can say... Cu mașina aceasta a prins avans foarte repede și a întrecut mașina tatei.
Dana: ... which means "With this car he caught up very fast and outran his dad's car."
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn about expressing logical relations. First, let’s learn how to express conjunction and disjunction.
Mihai: It is important to use the right conjunctions to connect two elements with the same value, I’ll give you the commonly used conjunctions in Romania.
Mihai: și
Dana: "and,"
Mihai: nici
Dana: "nor"
Mihai: și… și…
Dana: "and… also,"
Mihai: nici... nici...
Dana: "neither... nor…"

Dana: "as well as." Now let’s move onto the disjunction.
Mihai: Here are the commonly used disjunctions in Romania.
Mihai: sau
Dana: "or,"
Mihai: ori
Dana: "or"
Mihai: fie… fie…
Dana: "either… or..." And now, let’s learn the oppositions. When you have two elements that are opposed or contradictory, you can use one of the following words.
Mihai: însă, dar, or ci
Dana: These all mean "but,"
Mihai: în timp ce
Dana: "while,"
Mihai: în schimb
Dana: "instead." Okay, and now let’s move onto more complicated ones. Concession and exception.

Mihai: măcar că
Dana: "at least,"
Mihai: în ciuda
Dana: "in spite of." Can you give us a sentence using one of these concessions?
Mihai: Sure. Chiar dacă nu am mai fost în oraș de ani de zile, încă îmi amintesc drumul până la apartamentul tau.
Dana: "Even if I haven’t been in the city in years, I still remember the road to your place."
Mihai: This sentence starts with Chiar dacă which means "Even if."
Dana: You can find a lot more sample sentences that use these elements to make logical sentences in the lesson notes, so make sure to check them out.
