Bună tuturor! Sunt Raluca. Hi everybody! I’m Raluca.
Welcome to RomanianPod101.com’s Româna în 3 minute. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Romanian.
In our previous lessons, you learned how to use the verbs a fi and a avea. In this lesson, you’re going to learn how to turn these two verbs into their negative forms in order to say "I'm not" and "I don't have."
So let's take an example. Imagine you are about to go to a party with a Romanian friend. You ask him if he is ready, and he answers Nu sunt gata. meaning “I’m not ready.”
Then, you ask him if he has a car to use to go to the party and he says Nu am mașină. meaning “I don’t have a car.”
Let’s look at these two negative sentences.
[slowly] Nu sunt gata.
[slowly] Nu am mașină.
Did you catch some similar words in these two sentences?
Right! In each sentence, you have one more word, nu. It’s simple, right? Just add the word nu before the verb.
Now here’s another example:
Sunt italian. This means “I am Italian.” Let’s turn it into a negative statement.
Nu sunt italian. “I’m not Italian.”
As you can see, nothing changes. You just add nu before the verb! It doesn’t matter which verb you are using, the rule is always the same. Very easy, right?
So now, how would you say “I don’t want cake”? For your reference, I want cake in Romanian is Vreau o prăjitură.
[slowly] Vreau o prăjitură.
(pause) That’s right! Just put nu in before vreau and you’re done!
Nu vreau o prăjitură.
[slowly] Nu vreau o prăjitură.
Easy, don't you think? So now you can turn many sentences into their negative forms just by adding Nu. There are a couple of exceptions with the verbs “to like” and “to love”. But we will learn more about these in the next few lessons.
Now it’s time for Raluca’s Insights.
There is another way to reply negatively.
It’s also very easy - all you have to do is add another Nu to the beginning of a negative sentence. For example, Nu, nu am mașină meaning “No, I don’t have car.” and
Nu, nu vreau o prăjitură. meaning “No, I don’t want cake.” This way, you will put more emphasis on your denial.
Get ready for the next lesson, because we are going to study a really important part of the Romanian language – using adjectives.
I’ll be waiting for you in the next Româna în 3 minute lesson. Pe curând! See you soon!
