Welcome to RomanianPod101.com’s Româna în 3 minute. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Romanian.
In the last lesson, you learned the phrase ¿Cât costă asta? meaning “How much is it?” In this lesson you’ll see how you can answer that question by counting lei in Romanian. In Romania the currency is the RON and we refer to it as leu in the singular form or lei for plural. One leu is made up of 100 bani.
Let’s try to say prices in Romanian. Start by trying to say "26 Lei and 56 bani."
Douăzeci și șase de lei și cincizeci și șase de bani.
[slowly] Do-uă-zeci și șa-se de lei și cinci-zeci și șa-se de bani.
First, we say the number of lei, then the preposition de then lei. After that we say și, which is “and”, then the number of bani and finally the preposition de again then the word bani. Bani is the equivalent of “cents.” Note, though, that if the number of lei or bani is from 1 to 19, we don’t add the preposition de.
So once again, to say "26 Lei and 56 bani" it would be Douăzeci și șase de lei și cincizeci și șase de bani.
Just remember that if we are talking about only 1 Leu and only 1 ban, we have to say Un leu și un ban, using the singular form of the nouns.
Let’s try another example:
"34 Lei and 60 bani."
Treizeci și patru de lei și șaizeci de bani.
[slowly] Trei-zeci și pa-tru de lei și șai-zeci de bani.
Get ready for the next example. This one is a little longer:
"99 Lei and 99 bani."
Nouăzeci și nouă de lei și nouăzeci și nouă de bani.
[slowly] No-uă-zeci și no-uă de lei și no-uă-zeci și no-uă de bani.
That takes a lot of effort to say, doesn’t it!
Now it’s time for Raluca’s Insights.
The ‘Leu’ has been the Romanian currency since 1867. Here are some examples of prices in Romania:
A McDonald’s set costs “15 Lei” or ”cincisprezece lei”
A t-shirt costs “18 Lei.” or “optsprezece lei”
A soda is “2 lei and 50 bani.” which is doi lei și cincizeci de bani.
And a bottle of water is “1 leu” or un leu.
You should ask your friends in Romania if they want to go shopping with you to practice these phrases! But first you’ll have to check if they have other plans or not. Do you know how to ask that in Romanian? If not, I’ll see you in the next lesson!
