Romania is famous for its tasty food and wine. There is a wide variety of Romanian dishes, and your job as a visitor is to try as many different meals as possible! However, before you start eating, you have to get to the table! In this lesson, we'll cover getting a table in a restaurant.
BODY
When entering a Romanian restaurant, you will be greeted with Bine ați venit, which is translated as “welcome.”
(slow) Bi-ne ați ve-nit!
Bine ați venit!
The first word bine means “well”.
(slow) Bi-ne.
Bine.
Next we have “ați venit” a past tense form of the verb that means “to come”.
(slow) Ați ve-nit.
Ați venit.
You may also be greeted with Poftiți which means “welcome” but in English it can also be translated as “enter.”
(slow) Pof-tiți.
Poftiți.
When you enter a restaurant, a waiter or waitress will come and greet you and often ask you the question “How many people are you?” In Romanian, this is Câte persoane sunteți?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Câ-te per-soa-ne sun-teți?
Once more:
Câte persoane sunteți?
The first word, câte, means “how many?”
(slow) Câ-te?
Câte?
After this comes persoane, which means “persons” or “people”.
(slow) Per-soa-ne.
Persoane.
...and next we have sunteți, which is a present form of the verb a fi translated in English as “to be”
Now let’s learn to answer.
You might tell the waiter or waitress...
Suntem două persoane which in English means “We are two people.”
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Sun-tem do-uă per-soa-ne.
Once again:
Suntem două persoane.
The first word, suntem, is a form of the verb translated as “to be.”
(slow) Sun-tem.
Suntem.
After this comes două, the feminine form of number two.
(slow) Do-uă.
Două.
And last we have persoane which means “persons”.
Let’s take a look at some of the numbers you might need, from two to five:
2 două
(slow) do-uă
3 trei
(slow) trei
4 patru
(slow) pa-tru
5 cinci
(slow) cinci
If you are just one person, say Sunt doar eu. Because in Romanian the subject is not always necessary in the sentence, the literal translation is “am only me”, but that definitely sounds weird in English. So we will translate it as “only me” or “just me”.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Sunt doar eu.
Once more:
Sunt doar eu.
The first word, sunt, is a form of the verb that means “to be”.
(slow) Sunt.
Sunt.
After this we have doar eu which is translated as “only me.”

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so mult noroc , which means "Good luck!" in Romanian.
