INTRODUCTION

Now before we jump in, remember to stop by RomanianPod101.com.
There, you’ll find the accompanying PDF lesson notes and additional info in the post. If you stop by, be sure to leave us a comment.
In the previous lesson, we covered how to ask, “How do you say this in Romanian?”, which was Cum se spune la acesta/aceasta în română? Do you remember? In this lesson, because we don’t want you to be caught off guard in any kind of situation in Romania, we’re going to introduce a new phrase that’s important to help you focus on your skills, not on the sounds, but on the writing. So let’s start this new lesson.
BODY
In Romania, “Can you write it down, please?” is
Puteţi să scrieţi vă rog?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Pu-teţi să scri-eţi vă rog?
Once more:
Puteţi să scrieţi vă rog?
The first word puteţi is translated as “can you”. Puteţi also makes the phrase formal.
(slow) Pu-teţi.
Puteţi.
Next we have să scrieţi, which is translated as “to write”
(slow)Să scri-eţi.
Să scrieţi.
Vă rog is “please” as you may remember from previous lessons.
All together:
Puteţi să scrieţi vă rog?
This means, "Can you write it, please?”
As you already observed, the previous phrase is not very specific. To make yourself more clear you can say: “Can you write this phrase?”
Puteţi să scrieţi această frază?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Pu-teţi să scri-eţi a-ceas-tă fra-ză?
Once more:
Puteţi să scrieţi această frază?
The new word in this question is frază which means “phrase”
(slow) Fra-ză.
Frază.
Această frază means “this phrase.”
(slow) A-ceas-tă fra-ză.
Această frază.
Let’s hear the whole phrase one more time:
(slow)Pu-teţi să scri-eţi a-ceas-tă fra-ză?
Puteţi să scrieţi această frază?
Also, you can say Puteţi să scrieţi acest cuvânt? In English, that means “Can you write down this word?”
Let’s break it down.
(slow) Pu-teţi să scri-eţi a-cest cu-vânt?
Puteţi să scrieţi acest cuvânt?
It might be that people aren’t carrying a piece of paper or a pen. So before asking Puteţi să scrieţi acest cuvânt? try asking Aveţi o foaie şi un pix?
This means “Do you have paper and a pen?”
Let’s break it down:
(slow) A-veţi o foa-ie şi un pix?
Once more:
Aveţi o foaie şi un pix?
The first word, aveţi, is translated as “do you have”
(slow)A-veţi.
Aveţi.
Then you have o foaie, which in English is “a paper”.
(slow) O foa-ie.
O foaie.
Then you have şi which means “and”.
(slow) Şi.
Şi.
Finally, we have un pix which means “a pen”.
(slow)Un pix.
Un pix.
Here’s the whole sentence:
(slow) A-veți o foa-ie şi un pix?
Aveți o foaie şi un pix?
As usual, before asking about someone else’s stationery supplies, it’s a good idea to say “excuse me” or mă scuzaţi at the beginning of the sentence.
REVIEW
Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so mult noroc , which means "Good luck!" in Romanian.
