In this lesson, we’ll cover an extremely important phrase: “Where is the bathroom?”
BODY
In Romanian “Where is the bathroom?” is:
Unde este baia? Most of the time, this expression is used when you are invited to someone’s home.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Un-de es-te ba-ia?
Once more:
Unde este baia?
Let’s take a closer look at that. The first word, unde means “where.”
(slow) Un-de.
Unde.
This is followed by este, which is a present form of the verb “to be”.
(slow) Es-te.
Este.
The word baia, means “the bathroom.”
(slow) Baia.
Baia.
Let’s hear the whole question one more time.
(slow) Un-de es-te ba-ia?
Unde este baia?
Another phrase that Romanians use is “Where is the toilet?”, Unde este toaleta? This is the equivalent to Unde este baia? but is used more in public places like restaurants, theaters, and shopping centers.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Un-de es-te to-a-le-ta?
Once more:
Unde este toaleta?
As we mentioned, the first word, unde, means “where”
(slow) Un-de.
Unde.
The second word, este, is a present form of the verb “to be”.
(slow) Es-te.
Este.
And last we have toaleta which means “the toilet”.
(slow) To-a-le-ta.
Toaleta.
If you are looking for the ladies’ room, just take the phrase we just learned Unde este toaleta? and add the word femeilor at the end. It will sound like this:
Unde este toaleta femeilor?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Un-de es-te to-a-le-ta fe-me-i-lor?
Once more:
Unde este toaleta femeilor?
Femeilor can be translated as “ladies’”. It is formed by adding lor at the end of the word femei which in Romanian means “women.”
(slow) Fe-me-i-lor.
Femeilor.
Let’s repeat the whole question.
(slow) Un-de es-te to-a-le-ta fe-me-i-lor?
Once more:
Unde este toaleta femeilor?
If you are looking for the men’s room, just replace the word femeilor meaning “ladies’” with barbaților meaning “men’s”.
Unde este toaleta bărbaților?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Un-de es-te to-a-le-ta băr-ba-ți-lor?
Once more:
Unde este toaleta bărbaților?
Bărbatilor means “men’s.”
(slow) Băr-ba-ți-lor
Bărbaților
Let’s hear it one more time:
(slow) Un-de es-te to-a-le-ta băr-ba-ți-lor?
Once more:
Unde este toaleta bărbaților?
Let’s hear both of the sentences one more time:
Unde este toaleta femeilor.
Unde este toaleta bărbaților.
There might be restrooms in Romania where words are written on the doors. In this case, all you have to do is read the words. Let’s learn them.
As we’ve learned already, the word for “women” is
Femei.
And for “men,” you will see
Bărbați.
Let’s hear those once more.
The word for “women” is femei.
(slow) Fe-mei.
Femei.
The word for “men” is bărbați.
(slow) Băr-bați.
Bărbați.
In Romanian it may not always be simple to find a toilet. If you are on the street, for example, you will definitely want to ask: “Where is the nearest toilet?” In Romanian, that is translated as:
Unde este cea mai apropiată toaletă?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Un-de es-te cea mai a-pro-pi-a-tă to-a-le-tă?
Once more:
Unde este cea mai apropiată toaletă?
The new words in this sentence are cea mai apropiată, which all together are translated in English as “the nearest”.
(slow) cea mai a-pro-pi-a-tă
cea mai apropiată
Let’s hear the whole sentence again.
Unde este cea mai apropiată toaletă?
