Dana: Hi everyone, and welcome back to RomanianPod101.com. This is Beginner Season 1 Lesson 14 - Talking About Your Relationship Status in Romanian. Dana Here.
Mihai: Bună. I'm Mihai.
Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn about adverbs of time. The conversation takes place at a bar.
Mihai: It's between Mihai and Masanobu.
Dana: The speakers are friends; therefore, they will speak informal Romanian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Mihai: Tu ai prietenă?
Masanobu: Da, am. De ce?
Mihai: Doar de curiozitate. De când sunteți împreună?
Masanobu: De 2 (doi) ani. Tu?
Mihai: Eu nu am, dar în ultima vreme îmi doresc să am una.
Masanobu: Și ce gen de fete îți plac?
Mihai: Nu am un gen anume, dar vreau să avem hobby-uri comune.
Masanobu: Foarte bine. Sigur vei găsi.

Dana: Some people would consider the questions in this conversation to be a little personal.
Mihai: I guess you could say that.
Dana: How do Romanians respond to personal questions?
Mihai: Romanians are usually friendly and welcoming, but they can be reserved with personal information.
Dana: So you shouldn’t ask personal questions?
Mihai: Once a Romanian person gets to know you and builds trust with you, they’ll be more open.
Dana: Are there certain circumstances where personal questions are definitely frowned upon?
Mihai: You shouldn’t ask them when in a business situation.
Dana: Don’t mix business and personal details, right?
Mihai: Right. But over food and drinks, it’s fine.
Dana: So you won’t get asked many questions when you go to Romania?
Mihai: Ah, Romanians are interested in foreigners, so you’ll probably get many questions!

Mihai: You use it to describe a period of time that is close to the moment of speaking.
Dana: Can you give us an example using this word?
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. În ultima vreme adorm mai greu.

Dana: What can you tell us about Romanian adverbs of time?
Mihai: They can be simple, with a single element like acum,
Dana: Which means “now,” or they can be compound, with multiple elements.
Mihai: For example, de curând.
Dana: Which means “recently.” They can also be adverbial structures.
Mihai: Such as an de an.
Dana: “Every year.” There are long lists of more compound and adverbial structures in the lesson notes. For now, let’s hear some sentence examples.
Mihai: Pentru cât timp vei rămâne în Japonia la studii?
Dana: “For how long will you stay in Japan to study?”
Mihai: A fost multă gălăgie în fața casei azi-noapte.
Dana: “There was a lot of noise in front of the house last night.” Mihai, can you tell us a couple common adverbs of time?
Mihai: Sure, astăzi means “today”. Ce poţi face astăzi, nu lăsa pe mâine!
Dana: “What you can do today, do not postpone for tomorrow!” That’s a Romanian proverb.
Mihai: It is! It also used mâine, which means “tomorrow.”
Dana: How do you say “never?”
Mihai: niciodată. For example, Niciodată nu ne-am simțit așa de bine!
Dana: “We never felt so good!” Next, let’s look at the conjunction “and.”
Mihai: This is și. It is a simple conjunction, with a copulative function.
Dana: It can connect two sentences. Let’s hear it in action.
Mihai: Am fost la mare și apoi am mers la munte.
Dana: “We went to the sea and then we went to the mountains.”
Mihai: Vii la mine și îmi spui că s-a terminat?
Dana: “Are you coming to me and telling me it is over?”
