INTRODUCTION
Salut, and welcome to Romanian Survival Phrases, brought to you by RomanianPod101.com
This course is designed to equip you with the language skills and knowledge to enable you to get the most out of your visit to Romania. You'll be surprised at how far a little Romanian will go.
Now before we jump in, remember to stop by RomanianPod101.com.
There, you’ll find the accompanying PDF lesson notes and additional info in the post. If you stop by, be sure to leave us a comment.
This lesson isn’t only for all of the vegetarians out there, but it's also for anyone with an aversion to a particular food! There are many reasons a person won't eat a particular food, and there may be times when you’ll have to communicate this. In this lesson, we'll go over some phrases to make sure you don't get any unwanted surprises on your plate.
BODY
In Romanian, “I’m a vegetarian” is
Sunt vegetarian.
Let's break it down by syllable.
(slow) Sunt ve-ge-ta-ri-an.
Now let's hear it once again.
Sunt vegetarian.
The first word sunt means “I am”.
(slow) Sunt.
One more:
Sunt.
Then we have vegetarian. It’s easy to see that this means “vegetarian”.
Let’s hear the whole sentence one more time
(slow) Sunt ve-ge-ta-ri-an.
Sunt vegetarian.
This means, “I’m a vegetarian.”
Another way you can communicate that you don't eat a particular food is by saying just that!
In Romanian, “I don't eat meat” is
Nu mănânc carne.
Let's break it down by syllable.
(slow) Nu mă-nânc car-ne.
Now let's hear it once again.
Nu mănânc carne.
The first word nu means, “no” as we have learned in our previous lessons.
Next, we have mănânc, which is a form of the verb that means “to eat”.
(slow) Mă-nânc.
Mănânc.
Last we have carne, which means “meat”.
(slow)Car-ne.
Carne.
All together, we have Nu mănânc carne.
Literally, this means, “(I) don’t eat meat.”
(slow) Nu mă-nânc car-ne.
Nu mănânc carne.
Let’s now imagine that you don’t eat cheese. All you have to do is to replace carne with the Romanian word for cheese. That is brânză.
(slow) Brân-ză.
Brânză.
Now let's try the phrase with this word. “I don't eat cheese” in Romanian is
Nu mănânc brânză.
Let’s break it down by syllable.
(slow) Nu mă-nânc brân-ză.
Now let’s hear it one more time.
Nu mănânc brânză.
If you want to make sure your food doesn’t have an ingredient you can’t or you don’t want to eat, you should simply ask about it. For example, if you want to make sure a meal doesn’t have meat, you should ask, Această mâncare are carne ?, which means “Does this food have meat in it?”
(slow) A-ceas-tă mân-ca-re a-re car-ne?
Această mâncare are carne?
The first word această means, “this”.
(slow)A-ceas-tă.
Această.
Then you have mâncare, which means, “food” .
(slow) Mân-ca-re.
Mâncare.
Next we have are which is a form of the verb that means “to have”.
(slow) A-re.
Are.
As you probably remember, the next word from the sentence means “meat”.
(slow) Car-ne.
Carne.
Let’s hear it one more time.
(slow) A-ceas-tă mân-ca-re a-re car-ne?
Această mâncare are carne?
As we mentioned in previous lessons, Romanians often use pork in their dishes. Let’s imagine you don’t eat pork and you have to be more specific. It’s very simple. “I don’t eat pork” is:
Nu mănânc carne de porc.
Let’s break it down by syllable.
(slow)Nu mă-nânc car-ne de porc.
Once more
Nu mănânc carne de porc.
In this phrase, de porc is translated as “of pork”.
(slow) De porc.
De porc.
The whole sentence is Nu mănânc carne de porc.
REVIEW
Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so mult noroc , which means "Good luck!" in Romanian.

Bună Myreen,

I am Romanian and I have travelled to a few contries so far, but I have never eaten more delicious food than the Romanian cuisine. I swear it is one of the best things our country has, besides women, language, landscapes and music.

Thank you for your kind feedback.

Cheers

Mika

I cannot imagine anyone not trying traditional meat recipes when in Romania. Romanian food (not limited to meat) is one of the reasons foreigners loved their visit. 👌🏻Delicios!🍻🍗🥘
