Michael: Hi everyone, I'm Michael.
Larisa: And I'm Larisa!
Michael: And welcome to Culture Class: Essential Romanian Vocabulary, Season 1, Lesson 18! In this lesson, you'll learn five essential words related to transportation and getting around town. These are the five most frequently used modes of transportation in Romania. Hand-picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at RomanianPod101.com.
BODY
Michael: Larisa, what's our first word?
Larisa: autobuz
Michael: "bus"
Larisa: [SLOW] autobuz [NORMAL] autobuz
Michael: Listeners, please repeat:
Larisa: autobuz
[pause - 5 sec.]
Michael: Busses are found everywhere throughout all Romanian cities. They are the most common mode of transportation for most people.
Michael: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Larisa: [NORMAL] Orice autobuz din București are wi-fi gratuit.
Michael: "Every bus in Bucharest has free Wi-Fi."

Larisa: tramvai
[pause - 5 sec.]
Michael: In Romania, trams are very slow and most people prefer to avoid it. During the communist times, the tram system was very popular and it was widely used in 13 different cities across the country. Electric trams from the communist era are still in use in those cities, but many city halls announced their intention to remove the tram network and build bigger roads.
Michael: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Larisa: [NORMAL] Pentru a salva mașinile electrice, două tipuri de tramvaie au fost recondiționate și modernizate în București și Iași.
Michael: "In order to save the electric transports, two types of trams have been refurbished and modernised in Bucharest and Iasi."
Larisa: [SLOW] Pentru a salva mașinile electrice, două tipuri de tramvaie au fost recondiționate și modernizate în București și Iași.
Michael: Okay, what's the next word?
Larisa: metrou
Michael: "metro"
Larisa: [SLOW] metrou [NORMAL] metrou
Michael: Listeners, please repeat:
Larisa: metrou
[pause - 5 sec.]
Michael: Bucharest is the only city in Romania with a metro and it is run by a company named Metrorex. There are only 4 lines (named M1, M2, M3 and M4) and it is not necessary to memorize any route because there are maps for free at the metro gates. In general, the metro system works smoothly and it is very cheap, that's why more than 1 million Romanians are using this transportation every day.
Michael: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Larisa: [NORMAL] Metroul din București merge de la 5 dimineața până la miezul nopții.
Michael: "The Bucharest metro runs from 5 in the morning until midnight."
Larisa: [SLOW] Metroul din București merge de la 5 dimineața până la miezul nopții.
Michael: Okay, what's the next word?
Larisa: tren
Michael: "train"
Larisa: [SLOW] tren [NORMAL] tren

[pause - 5 sec.]

Michael: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Larisa: [NORMAL] În România, în majoritatea zonelor turistice se poate ajunge cu trenul.
Michael: "In Romania most tourist areas can be reached by train."
Larisa: [SLOW] În România, în majoritatea zonelor turistice se poate ajunge cu trenul.
Michael: Okay, what's the next word?
Larisa: avion
Michael: "airplane"
Larisa: [SLOW] avion [NORMAL] avion
Michael: Listeners, please repeat:
Larisa: avion
[pause - 5 sec.]
Michael: Romania built many types of airplanes during World War II and still has a small aircraft industry. TAROM is the main Romanian airline. Many people prefer to use low-cost air companies because their fares are cheaper (and sometimes more reliable) compared with the national airline. Henri Coanda Airport is only 16 km from the capital of the country and is the largest and busiest airport of Romania.
Michael: Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Larisa: [NORMAL] Linia aeriană Tarom a cumpărat anul acesta două avioane de cursă lungă pentru zborurile către China și Statele Unite.
