POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Dana: Mihai, what can you tell us about Romanian holidays?
Mihai: The first holiday that I’ll tell you about is Dragobete.
Dana: What is that?
Mihai: It’s a celebration with Dacian origins, celebrated by Romanians on February 24th. It’s considered to be the equivalent of Valentine’s Day.
Dana: What other holidays are there?
Mihai: There is also Mărțișor, which celebrates the arrival of spring on March 1st.
Dana: Is there anything special about this day?
Mihai: Men give women small zoomorphic amulets or jewels that are tied by two red and white strings with a hanging tassel. These are given as symbols of friendship, love, appreciation and respect.
Dana: What about Christmas? Is it big in Romania?
Mihai: It’s the second biggest holiday behind Easter. On December 24th, people decorate their Christmas trees and children go out caroling.
Dana: Are there any other special events during Christmas time?
Mihai: People also slaughter a pig that’s been bred and nurtured throughout the year. This is based off an old tradition. The meat is then used for Christmas delicacies.

Mihai: De când nu am mai vorbit!
Dana: Meaning "We haven't talked in ages!"
Dana: What can you tell us about this, Mihai?
Mihai: De când is an adverb and means “since.” The second half of the sentence is nu am mai vorbit.
Dana: This means “we haven’t talked.” So altogether, it means “since we haven’t talked.”
Mihai: It sounds like an incomplete sentence, but you can use it to express surprise when you see someone you haven’t seen in awhile.
Dana: When can you use this expression?
Mihai: It can be used in both formal and informal situations.
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say... De când nu am mai vorbit, mi-am terminat studiile.
Dana: ..which means "Since we haven't talked, I've finished my studies."
Dana: Okay, what's the next word?
Mihai: De abia aștept!
Dana: Meaning "I can hardly wait!"
Dana: You can also translate this as “I am looking forward to it.”
Mihai: Or “I cannot wait.”
Dana: You can use this to express your excitement about an upcoming event.
Mihai: It can be used in both formal and informal situations.
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. De abia aștept să vă văd.
Dana: .. which means "I am looking forward to seeing you."
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.
Lesson focus

Dana: Let’s look at accepting invitations first. The first thing you should do is to thank the host.
Mihai: There are many ways to express this.
Dana: What can we say for informal events?
Mihai: An informal response is Ce drăguț din partea ta!
Dana: “That’s so nice of you!”
Mihai: And a formal response is Mulțumesc mult pentru invitație. Sună tare bine.
Dana: “Thanks a lot for the invitation. Sounds like fun.”
Mihai: A formal response to an invitation would be Vă mulțumesc pentru invitație. Sunt onorat să fiu invitat la conferința dumneavoastră.
Dana: “Thank you for your invitation. I am honored to be invited to your conference.” Now, how about accepting an invitation?
Mihai: A formal response to an informal event is Sigur că vin, cu mare plăcere.
Dana: “Of course, I’d be very pleased to come.”
Mihai: An informal response to an informal event is Super! Abia aștept!
Dana: “Wow! I can’t wait!”
Mihai: And a formal response to a formal event is Confirm prin acest mesaj prezența mea. Cu deosebită considerație
Dana: "I hereby confirm my attendance. Sincerely,” and then add your name. And finally, let’s look at how to decline an invitation.
Mihai: A formal response to an informal event is Îmi pare foarte rău, dar nu am cum să vin joi seara, mi-am făcut deja alte planuri.
