Bună tuturor! Sunt Raluca. Hi everybody! I’m Raluca. Welcome to RomanianPod101.com’s Româna în 3 minute. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Romanian.
In the last lesson, you learned how to use the verb a veni. We will now jump into question words in Romanian!
Our first one is the most commonly used question word in Romanian, and that is "What." You’ll see that it is really easy to use this word in Romanian.
So imagine you want to ask your friend "What are you doing?" How would you do it?
You would ask- ¿Ce faci?
[slowly] ¿Ce faci?
Let’s break down this answer.
And finally, faci is the 2nd person form of the verb a face, which we already learned.
Ce is the Romanian word for "What".
Tu or “you” is omitted. As you may remember, we can omit the pronouns because Romanian verbs are always conjugated according to them. In this case, it’s “You”.
So, all together it is ¿Ce faci?
It means “What are you doing?”
As you can see, in Romanian, "What" is Ce.
Be careful, because ce is used to ask but at the same time can also be used to answer as in Ce idee minunată! meaning “What a great idea!”. It depends on the context.
The rule is simple - each time you want to ask a question, start with "What" and follow it with a verb.
¿Ce mănânci? means “What are you eating?”
[slowly] ¿Ce mănânci?
¿Ce desenezi? means “What are you drawing?”
[slowly] ¿Ce desenezi?
Now it’s time for Raluca’s Insights.
Sometimes you may ask a question that enables various answers as in "Which is your favorite one?" In this case, you have to use pe care which is the literal translation of "which" or "which one".
¿Pe care il preferi? means "Which one do you prefer?"
But if you are asking for a concrete answer, then “Which” is also ce.
For example-
¿Ce zi? meaning ”Which day?”
And ¿Ce mașină? meaning ”Which car?”
In this lesson, you learned how to translate the word "What" depending on the grammatical situation.Next time, we will talk about the question word "Where". Do you know it already? I can promise it’s as easy as "what"! I’ll be waiting for you in the next Româna în 3 minute lesson. Pe curând! See you soon!
