In the last lesson, you learned how to make a reservation in a restaurant. Now that you know how to get a table, you have another big issue to tackle. If you want to enjoy your meal, the smoking issue is very important. If you are a smoker in a non-smoking establishment or a non-smoker in a smoking establishment, this could ruin your meal.
In this lesson, we'll cover how to ask for a smoking or non-smoking table.
BODY
First we will imagine that you are a smoker. Before entering a restaurant, you need to ask, “Excuse me, is smoking allowed here?”:
Mă scuzați, se fumează aici?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Mă scu-zați, se fu-mea-ză a-ici?
Once more:
Mă scuzați, se fumează aici?
Mă scuzați, as we have seen, means “Excuse me.”
(slow) Mă scu-zați.
Mă scuzați.
We follow this with se fumează, which is translated as “to smoke”.
(slow) Se fu-mea-ză.
Se fumează.
And next, aici, which means “here”.
(slow) A-ici.
Aici.
Here’s the whole sentence:
Mă scuzați, se fumează aici?
(slow) Mă scu-zați se fu-mea-ză a-ici?
The answer to this question is simple: Da se fumează meaning “Yes, smoking is allowed” or Nu, nu se fumează meaning “No, smoking is not allowed”.
Let’s break those down:
(slow) Da, se fu-mea-ză.
Da, se fumează.
(slow) Nu, nu se fu-mea-ză.
Nu, nu se fumează.
Now let’s imagine you don’t smoke. In this case, when you get to the restaurant, you should ask: ”Do you have tables for non-smokers?”
Aveți mese pentru nefumători?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) A-veți me-se pen-tru ne-fu-mă-tori?
Once more at natural speed:
Aveți mese pentru nefumători?
Aveți is a form of the verb which means “to have”
(slow) Aveți.
Aveți.
Mese means “tables”
(slow) Me-se
Mese
Pentru means “for.”
(slow) Pen-tru
Pentru
And the word nefumători is translated as “non smokers”.
(slow) Ne-fu-mă-tori
Nefumători.
The whole question is:
Aveți mese pentru nefumători?
(slow) Aveți me-se pen-tru ne-fu-mă-tori?
Once more:
Aveți mese pentru nefumători?
Now let’s go over the possible answers to this question. If it’s a positive answer, you might hear
Da avem and if the answer is negative, you might hear Nu, nu avem.
In these expressions:
Da means “yes”
Nu means “no” and
Avem is a conjugated form of the verb a avea translated as “to have”.
(slow) A-vem.
Avem.
Let’s hear the expressions again:
“Yes, we do.” (Literally: Yes, we have.)
(slow) Da avem.
Da avem.
“No, we don’t.” (Literally: No, we don’t have.)
(slow) Nu, nu avem.
Nu, nu avem.
When the answer is negative, you will also hear “we are sorry” attached to nu avem. The phrase will sound like this: Ne cerem scuze, nu avem.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Ne ce-rem scu-ze, nu a-vem.
Once more at natural speed:
Ne cerem scuze, nu avem.
