Michael: Top 25 Romanian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 4: "What’s your job?" in Romanian. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Romanian learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "What’s your job?" In Romanian this is...
Larisa: Care este jobul tău?
Michael: The first word of this question is...
Larisa: care
Michael: meaning "what" in English.
Larisa: (Slow) care
Michael: Listen again and repeat.
Larisa: care
{Pause}
Michael: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Larisa: este
Michael: meaning "is" in English.
Larisa: (Slow) este
Michael: Now repeat.
Larisa: este
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Larisa: care este
{Pause}
Michael: Next is...

Michael: You'll hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "What’s your job?"
Larisa: Eu sunt profesor.
Michael: "I'm a teacher." Listen as the phrase is repeated slowly. Then repeat the phrase.
Larisa: (Slow) Eu sunt profesor.
{pause}
Michael: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Larisa: Eu
Michael: meaning "I"
Larisa: (Slow) Eu
Michael: Now repeat.
Larisa: Eu
{Pause}
Michael: And after that,
Larisa: sunt
Michael: meaning "am."
Larisa: (Slow) sunt
Michael: Now repeat.
Larisa: sunt
{Pause}
Michael: And last is...
Larisa: profesor
Michael: meaning "teacher."
Larisa: (Slow) profesor
Michael: Now repeat.
Larisa: profesor
{Pause}
Michael: Listen to the speaker say "I'm a teacher." and repeat.
Larisa: Eu sunt profesor.
{Pause}
Michael: To expand on the pattern, let’s replace "teacher" with "singer." In Romanian this is
Larisa: cântăreț
Michael: "singer"
Larisa: (slow) cântăreț (regular) cântăreț
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "singer."
Larisa: Eu sunt cântăreț.
Michael: We replaced "teacher" with "singer," but the phrase mostly stays the same. Now say, "I'm a singer."
{pause}
Larisa: Eu sunt cântăreț.
Michael: To expand on the pattern, replace "singer" with "artist."
Larisa: artist
Michael: "artist"
Larisa: (slow) artist (regular) artist
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "artist."
Larisa: Eu sunt artist.
Michael: It mostly stays the same, just replace "singer" with "artist." Say, "I'm an artist."
{pause}
Larisa: Eu sunt artist.
Michael: For more practice, let’s replace "artist" with "banker."
Larisa: bancher
Michael: "banker"
Larisa: (slow) bancher (regular) bancher
Michael: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "banker."
Larisa: Eu sunt bancher.
Michael: Here we simply replaced "artist" with "banker." Now say, "I'm a banker."
{pause}
Larisa: Eu sunt bancher.
Michael: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Romania and someone asks you what you do. You’re a teacher. Respond to the question.
Larisa: Care este jobul tău? (five seconds) Eu sunt profesor.
Michael: Imagine you’re a banker. How would you respond?
Larisa: Care este jobul tău? (five seconds) Eu sunt bancher.
Michael: Imagine you’re an artist. Answer the speaker's question.
Larisa: Care este jobul tău? (five seconds) Eu sunt artist.
Michael: Imagine you're a singer. How will you answer?
Larisa: Care este jobul tău? (five seconds) Eu sunt cântăreț.
Michael: Now you want to learn what that person does. Ask them the question.
(5 seconds)
Larisa: Care este jobul tău?
{pause}
Michael: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself. Make sure to practice out loud.
Larisa: Care este jobul tău?
